Vale of Glamorgan Football League Round Up

Vale of Glamorgan Football League Round Up

As the Vale league hits the home straight, it promises to be a pulsating end to the season, here’s the round up from this past weekend.

Dave Stephenson scored a dramatic last gasp winner as FC Barry Belgrade won the first silverware of the season, as they lifted the historic ASRS Cup after a 2-1 win over Barry Athletic at Jenner Park on Sunday. Stephenson had given Belgrade the lead early in the game before Ben Pearce equalised for Athletic four minutes from time. But with 95 minutes on the clock Belgrade won it.

Twenty four hours earlier, Premier Division league leaders St Athan ran out 3-0 winner over bottom side Penarth Town. The win moves St Athan six points ahead of FC Barry Belgrade, although Belgrade have a mammoth five games in hand. Island Marine continued their fine form with a 4-0 away win against Cowbridge Town, that’s five games without a win for Town.

In Division One, leaders Sully Sports thumped Cwm Talwg 5-1, Sully can now win the Division One Title next weekend if they collect all three points or if nearest rivals Barry Saints fail to win. Barry Saints kept the pressure on Sully with a 5-3 victory over SP Billy to stay five points off top. Cogan got back to winning ways with an impressive 4-1 away win against Cardiff Airport. Tynewydd continued their recent form with a narrow 1-0 win over Penarth Town B. Penarth head into next week’s must win against Cwm Talwg now. Cadoxton Athletic’s poor form went on as they lost a ten goal thriller to Cadoxton Imps 6-4, a huge win for Imps in their quest for survival, that’s seven league losses on the bounce from Athletic.

In Division Two, just the one league game played as the Dockers Cup semi finals took centre stage. In the league Island Marine B went fourth after a 1-0 win over bottom side Glenbrook. In the Dockers Cup Llantwit Major secured their second cup final of the season with a 4-2 win over BRT Dynamos. They will play Rhoose B after they emphatically booked their final berth with a 6-1 win over BVFC.

Next weekend sees a league program and of course the Barry Cup Final, St Athan and Llantwit Major will compete in the Vale league showpiece. Check back here next week for a full round up.
