AFC Rhoose 0-0 St Athan

AFC Rhoose 0-0 St Athan

League Leaders St Athan and second place Rhoose played out a stalemate on a blustery afternoon next to the airport, but this was not a game that blew you away.

Saints made two changes from last week’s fine win with Josh Harfoot and Kieran Ashton coming in.

Saints had the aid of the wind first half as it whipped off the adjacent runway and looked to use the advantage.

Bradley Young fired over from distance before Nathan Williams saw his effort tipped over. Rhoose came back and saw a break up field result in a shot narrowly wide.

Saints pushed for the opener and the Rhoose keeper palmed away Aaron Rogers effort before Karl Steel shot inches wide after good work from Ashton.

Rhoose came into the game knowing a win would take them top and saw two long range efforts off target. St Athan sit top and a win would have strengthened their position as FC Barry Belgrade sat a mere five points behind coming in with five games in hand. Saints finished the half with Ashton firing wide and Nicky Cox lashing over after a good link up with Jordan Mortimore.

Second half saw Jake Sutch introduced as Saints looked to consolidate their position.

Despite Rhoose now having the wind to their backs advantage it was Saints who created the best chance breaking forward in a three on one opportunity but could not quite find that killer pass and the attack was quelled.

Rhoose began to see the chances come their way with long range efforts off target or well held by Saints keeper. Rhoose then saw their best chance so far, as their midfielder sent a ball into the box from a central post up only for the forward to head it wide. St Athan came back with a succession of corners but couldn’t find the way through.

Rhoose were then reduced to ten men as their defender brought down Williams as he looked to burst into the box with what was deemed a reckless challenge and the red card produced. Mortimore then fired the resulting free kick over the bar before Williams fired well over minutes later.

Rhoose almost won it with the final kick as their forward raced away only to see his effort way off target.

So a first 0-0 from St Athan for many years, but a hard earned point that keeps Saints top of the pile, but FC Barry Belgrade go three points behind after a 1-0 win over Barry Athletic with five games in hand.
